To πανίσχυρο μαγνητικό πεδίο του Ήλιου αλλάζει πολικότητα κάθε 11 χρόνια. Η NASA ανακοίνωσε ότι μετά από διεργασίες λίγων μηνών το φαινόμενο ολοκληρώθηκε στο μητρικό μας άστρο. Η ολοκλήρωση της διεργασίας είναι πιθανό να προσφέρει στους κατοίκους της Γης ένα θεαματικό βόρειο και νότιο σέλας.
Συνήθως η αντιστροφή συμβαίνει κατά τη διάρκεια του λεγόμενου ηλιακού μέγιστου -το αποκορύφωμα στον 11ετή κύκλο αυξομείωσης της ηλιακής δραστηριότητας, κατά το οποίο φτάνει στο μέγιστο ο αριθμός των ηλιακών κηλίδων. Αν και ο μηχανισμός της αντιστροφής της πολικότητας δεν είναι ακόμα κατανοητός, οι ηλιακές κηλίδες παίζουν σημαντικό ρόλο.
