Στις αμερικανικές υπηρεσίες πληροφοριών στρέφουν τώρα τα πυρά τους οι Τούρκοι για το επεισόδιο στις 3 Ιουλίου ανοιχτά της Ρόδου, όταν πλοία της ελληνικής ακτοφυλακής άνοιξαν πυρ σε τουρκικό φορτηγό που δεν υπάκουσε στην εντολή να σταματήσει για να το ερευνήσουν.

Όπως αναφέρει σήμερα ο τουρκικός τύπος, το αμερικανό Τμήμα Καταπολέμηση του Λαθρεμπόρου Ναρκωτικών, γνωστό ως DEA, ήταν αυτό που είχε δώσει την πληροφορία στις ελληνικές αρχές για επέμβαση στο τουρκικό πλοίο που έρχονταν από την Αλεξανδρέττα με προορισμό την Σμύρνη, γιατί μετάφερε μεγάλες ποσότητες ναρκωτικών.
Οι Τούρκοι βέβαια στην υποτιθέμενη έρευνα που έκαναν στο πλοίο στη συνέχεια δηλώσαν ότι δεν βρέθηκε τίποτα, άρα… αθώος ο κατηγορούμενος!
Πάντως το γεγονός προκάλεσε την έντονη αντίδραση της Άγκυρας που χαρακτήρισε την ελληνική ακτοφυλακή σαν πειρατική συμμορία και ότι δεν θα ανεχτεί παρόμοιες ενέργειες από την Ελλάδα.
