Ο Αμερικανός πρόεδρος Ντόναλντ Τραμπ δήλωσε στους ομολόγους τους κατά τη διάρκεια της συνόδου κορυφής της Ομάδας των Επτά (G7) που διεξήχθη στον Καναδά ότι το ΝΑΤΟ είναι «τόσο κακό όπως η NAFTA», η συμφωνία για τις ελεύθερες εμπορικές συναλλαγές στην περιοχή της Βόρειας Αμερικής, που έχει απειλήσει να σκίσει.
Το σχόλιο αυτό του Τραμπ δημοσιεύτηκε την Πέμπτη από τον αμερικανικό ειδησεογραφικό ιστότοπο Axio και επιβεβαιώθηκε από έναν Ευρωπαίο διπλωμάτη. Η σύνοδος κορυφής της G7 στο Κεμπέκ ήταν ήδη έντονη, μετά την επιβολή από τον Αμερικανό πρόεδρο δασμών στις εισαγωγές χάλυβα και αλουμινίου στους κύριους συμμάχους των ΗΠΑ.
Οι δηλώσεις Τραμπ έρχονται στη δημοσιότητα καθώς ο Λευκός Οίκος και το Κρεμλίνο ανακοίνωσαν ότι ο Ρεπουμπλικάνος μεγιστάνας και ο Ρώσος Πρόεδρος Βλαντιμίρ Πούτιν θα συναντηθούν στη Φινλανδία αμέσως μετά τη σύνοδο κορυφής του ΝΑΤΟ. Η τελευταία θα διεξαχθεί στις 11 και 12 Ιουλίου στις Βρυξέλλες.
