Έχει υπολογιστεί ότι 10-30 εκατομμύρια Άνθρωποι έχουν λάβει μια μολυσμένη δόση του εμβολίου SV40. Ο SV40 είναι μια συντομογραφία για τον ιό Simian, ή ιός του πιθήκου 40, ένας Ιός Πολυώματος που βρίσκεται στους πιθήκους και στους ανθρώπους.
Όπως και άλλοι Ιοί Πολυώματος, ο SV40 είναι ένας ιός DNA που έχει βρεθεί ότι προκαλεί όγκους και καρκίνο.
Ο SV40 πιστεύεται ότι καταστέλει τις μεταγραφικές ιδιότητες των καρκινικών- γονιδίων στον άνθρωπο μέσω του Μεγάλου SV40 Τ-αντιγόνου και του SV40 Μικρού Τ-αντιγόνου.
Τα μεταλλαγμένα γονίδια συμβάλουν στον ανεξέλεγκτο κυτταρικό πολλαπλασιασμό, που οδηγεί σε καρκίνο.
