Η ακριβής προέλευση “Των τριών ζωντανών και των τριών νεκρών” παραμένει μυστηριώδης, αλλά υπάρχουν πολλές εκδοχές ότι η ιστορία προέρχεται από τον 13ο αιώνα, και οι πιο γνωστές από την Αγγλία και τη Γαλλία. Η βασική εκδοχή της ιστορίας έχει ως εξής: τρεις νεαροί αριστοκράτες κυνηγούν, όταν ξαφνικά συναντούν τρία πτώματα, τα οποία βρίσκονται σε διαφορετικές καταστάσεις σήψης, αλλά παρ’ όλα αυτά κινούνται. Όπως είναι αναμενόμενο, οι νέοι σοκάρονται και θλίβονται με το θέαμα, ενώ τα τρία πτώματα τους επιπλήττουν για να την παροδικότητα της ζωής και τους λένε να βελτιώσουν τη συμπεριφορά τους πριν να είναι πολύ αργά.
