Σε αυτό το επεισόδιο του ντοκυμαντέρ “Ο Αιώνας Του Εαυτού” εξετάζεται το
πως οι “αριστεροί” πολιτικοί τόσο στη Βρετανία όσο και στην Αμερική
στράφηκαν στις τεχνικές που ανέπτυξαν οι διαφημιστικές και πολυεθνικές
εταιρίες για την ψυχολογία του ανθρώπου, την ικανοποίηση του εσωτερικού
εαυτού και τις επιθυμίες του. Πολιτικοί εκατέρωθεν κινημάτων
χρησιμοποίησαν τα ίδια “φόκους γκρούπ” που ανακαλύφτηκαν από τους
ψυχαναλυτές για την ανάληψη της εξουσίας.
Ξεκίνησαν να προσκολλούν τις
πολιτικές στις βαθιές επιθυμίες και συναισθήματα των ανθρώπων με τον
τρόπο που ο καπιταλισμός αντιστοίχως είχε μάθει να τους προσκολλά στην
κατανάλωση συσκευών, υλικών και προϊόντων. Μέσα από αυτήν τη διαδικασία
μια νέα κουλτούρα και τεχνοτροπία πολιτικής αναδύθηκε η οποία επέτρεπε
στους πολιτικούς να πιστεύουν ότι δημιουργούν μια νέα και βελτιωμένη
μορφή της “δημοκρατίας”.
