Η Ελλάδα συγκαταλέγεται στις φτωχότερες χώρες της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης των «27», όπως δείχνει συγκριτική έρευνα του Ινστιτούτου Γερμανικής Οικονομίας (IW) και ξεπερνά μόνον τις Βουλγαρία και Ρουμανία.
Σύμφωνα με την Deutsche Welle συγκριτική έρευνα του Ινστιτούτου Γερμανικής Οικονομίας για τη φτώχια στις «27» χώρες της ΕΕ κατατάσσει την Γερμανία στην 7η θέση. Ενώ στις λιγότερο φτωχές χώρες περιλαμβάνονται οι Δανία, Σουηδία, Φινλανδία, αλλά και το Λουξεμβούργο, η Ολλανδία και η Αυστρία. Στην 25η θέση βρίσκεται η Ελλάδα και στις δύο τελευταίες η Βουλγαρία και η Ρουμανία.
Η έρευνα του IW προσδιόρισε τη φτώχια βασιζόμενη σε τέσσερις βασικούς δείκτες: τη σχετική εισοδηματική φτώχια, η οποία πλήττει όσους διαθέτουν εισόδημα κάτω από το 60% του μέσου όρου της χώρας στην οποία ζουν, την υποκειμενική εισοδηματική φτώχια, που βασίζεται στην ατομική εκτίμηση, τον λεγόμενο παράγοντα της στέρησης (χαμηλό επίπεδο διαβίωσης) και τέλος την οικονομική στενότητα, η οποία δείχνει το βαθμό επάρκειας του εισοδήματος ενός νοικοκυριού.
Βάσει της έρευνας πιο έντονο είναι το πρόβλημα της φτώχιας στις νεότερες χώρες-μέλη της ΕΕ, Λετονία, Βουλγαρία και Ρουμανία, στις οποίες έρχεται να προστεθεί η Ελλάδα.
