Κάποτε, δυο άντρες μπήκαν σε μια βάρκα και βγήκαν στον ωκεανό.
Κάποια στιγμή, ο ένας άρχισε να ανοίγει μια τρύπα στον πάτο της και ο άλλος κατάπληκτος του φώναξε: «Τι κάνεις; Σταμάτα αμέσως να τρυπάς τη βάρκα!».
Τότε ο πρώτος του απάντησε: «Μην ανησυχείς, η τρύπα που κάνω είναι μόνο από την δική μου πλευρά».
Είμαστε όλοι στην ίδια βάρκα, φίλοι και εχθροί, γνωστοί και άγνωστοι. Εάν βυθιστεί η βάρκα θα βυθιστούμε όλοι μαζί. Κάθε φορά που αδιαφορούμε για την αδικία που συντελείται στον συνάνθρωπό μας, είναι σαν να επιτρέπουμε να ανοίγει άλλη μια τρύπα στη κοινή μας βάρκα. Είναι όμως θέμα χρόνου να βυθιστούμε όλοι. Μόνο όταν συνειδητοποιούσαμε ότι δεν είναι αλληλεγγύη ή “φιλανθρωπία” το να συμπαρασταθούμε στον συνάνθρωπό μας, αλλά υποχρέωση για εμάς τους ίδιους, τότε μόνο, η κοινωνία μας θα έχει μια πραγματική ελπίδα.
