Το State Department έδωσε εντολή εκκένωσης της Αμερικανικής Πρεσβείας στη Τρίπολη της Λιβυής εξαιτίας των μαχών που έχουν ξεσπάσει στην πόλη μεταξύ στρατιωτικών μονάδων που προσπαθούν να επιβληθούν στη μετά Καντάφι εποχή.
Η ανακοίνωση αναφέρει ότι οι διπλωμάτες και το υπόλοιπο προσωπικό της Αμερικανικής Πρεσβείας αποσύρθηκε από την Τρίπολη το βράδυ της Παρασκευής με προορισμό την γειτονική Τυνησία. Όλες οι εργασίες της πρεσβείας θα ανασταλούν μέχρι να βελτιωθεί η κατάσταση.
Τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες η Τρίπολη έχει μετατραπεί σε σκηνικό πολέμου μεταξύ ανταγωνιστικών φατριών που μάχονται για την επικράτησή τους. Οι μάχες στην πόλη έχουν προκαλέσει τον θάνατο εκατοντάδων μαχητών και αμάχων. Ιδιαίτερη ένταση υπάρχει και στο διεθνές αεροδρόμιο της πόλης.
Αυτή είναι η δεύτερη φορά που οι ΗΠΑ κλείνουν την πρεσβεία τους στην πρωτεύουσα της Λιβυής μετά την πτώση του Μουαμάρ Καντάφι. Η πρώτη ήταν το Φεβρουάριο του 2011.
