Το νερό στον εσωτερικό μανδύα της Σελήνης προήλθε από πρωτόγονους μετεωρίτες, η νέα έρευνα διαπιστώνει, την ίδια πηγή που πιστεύεται ότι έχει παράσχει το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του νερού στη Γη.
Τα ευρήματα εγείρουν νέα ερωτήματα σχετικά με τη διαδικασία που διαμόρφωσε το φεγγάρι.
Η Σελήνη πιστεύεται ότι σχηματίστηκε από υπολείμματα ενός δίσκου όταν ένα γιγάντιο αντικείμενο είχε χτυπήσει τη Γη 4,5 δισεκατομμύρια χρόνια πριν στην ιστορία της Γης. Οι επιστήμονες έχουν από καιρό θεωρήσει ότι η θερμότητα από την επίδραση αυτού του μεγέθους θα ανάγκαζε το υδρογόνο και άλλα πτητικά στοιχεία να βράσουν μακριά στο διάστημα, που σημαίνει ότι η Σελήνη πρέπει να είχε ξεκινήσει τελείως στεγνή.
Όμως, πρόσφατα, διαστημικά σκάφη της NASA και νέες έρευνες σε δείγματα από τις αποστολές του Apollo έχουν δείξει ότι η Σελήνη έχει στην πραγματικότητα νερό, τόσο στην επιφάνεια αλλά και κάτω.
