Το τουρκικό ερευνητικό «Πίρι Ρέις» βρίσκεται στη Χίο και έχει ξεκινήσει σεισμολογικές έρευνες. Σύμφωνα με τις πρώτες πληροφορίες δεν έχει παραβιάσει ελληνικά χωρικά ύδατα. Κινείται εντός των τουρκικών χωρικών υδάτων και της περιοχής που έχει δεσμεύσει με NAVTEX. Η αναγγελία προβλέπει πως οι έρευνες θα συνεχιστούν μέχρι τις 5 Απριλίου.
Η κίνηση της Άγκυρας είναι ενδεικτική των προθέσεων της που έχουν εκφραστεί τόσο με τη ρηματική διακοίνωση που κατέθεσε στον ΟΗΕ όσο και με δηλώσεις της σε πολιτικό επίπεδο για την αμφισβήτηση της ελληνικής υφαλοκρηπίδας στο Αιγαίο.
Η Άγκυρα θέλει τη συναδιαχείριση του Αιγαίου και την συνεκμετάλλευση των ενεργειακών κοιτασμάτων εντός της ελληνικής ΑΟΖ και για να προωθήσει τις αξιώσεις είναι αποφασισμένη να προκαλέσει ακόμη και «θερμό επεισόδιο».
Το τουρκικό ερευνητικό σκάφος βρίσκεται υπο παρακολούθηση από ναυτικές δυνάμεις των ελληνικών Ένοπλων Δυνάμεων.
