Η εφαρμογή τέθηκε σε λειτουργία μετά τα γεγονότα στη Βοστώνη
Τα αιματηρά γεγονότα στο Μαραθώνιο Βοστώνης, κινητοποίησαν την Google, η οποία δημιούργησε μια σελίδα για τον εντοπισμό ανθρώπων που βρίσκονταν στο σημείο της έκρηξης.
Βασίζεται στην εφαρμογή Google Person Finder και δημιουργήθηκε με σκοπό να παράσχει πληροφορίες ώστε να εντοπιστούν συγγενείς και φίλοι μετά από μια καταστροφή. Η εφαρμογή μπορεί να βρεθεί στη διεύθυνση: google.org/personfinder/2013-boston-explosions.
Στη σελίδα Boston Marathon Person Finder, ο χρήστης συναντά δύο βασικές επιλογές: είτε να αναζητήσει κάποιον, είτε να δώσει πληροφορίες για κάποιον («I’m looking for someone» και «I have information about someone», αντίστοιχα).
«Το Google Person Finder είναι μια διαδικτυακή εφαρμογή που επιτρέπει σε ιδιώτες να δηλώνουν ή να αναζητούν την κατάσταση συγγενών ή φίλων που έχουν επηρεαστεί από μια καταστροφή», ενημερώνει η εταιρεία, στις «Συχνές Ερωτήσεις» (FAQ). «Το πρόγραμμα επιτρέπει επίσης διεθνή πρακτορεία, μη κυβερνητικές οργανώσεις και άλλους να συνεισφέρουν στη βάση δεδομένων και να λαμβάνουν ενημερώσεις χρησιμοποιώντας το Person Finder API».
Όσο για αυτούς που μπορεί να ανησυχούν για προσωπικά δεδομένα πολιτών, η Google ενημερώνει πως όταν κάποιος δημιουργεί μια νέα εγγραφή στο Google Person Finder, του ζητείται να θέσει μια ημερομηνία «λήξης» για το αρχείο. Την ορισμένη αυτή ημερομηνία, τα δεδομένα θα πάψουν να είναι προσβάσιμα από χρήστες.
