Σεισμική δόνηση μεγέθους 6,1 βαθμών της κλίμακας Ρίχτερ σημειώθηκε την Τρίτη στην Ινδονησία και το Ανατολικό Τιμόρ, σύμφωνα με το αμερικανικό Ινστιτούτο Γεωφυσικής (USGS). Όπως αναφέρθηκε, δεν υπάρχει κίνδυνος εκδήλωσης τσουνάμι.
Ο σεισμός σημειώθηκε στις 7:36 π.μ. τοπική ώρα (22:36 GMT Δευτέρα), στο ανατολικό άκρο του αρχιπελάγους της Ινδονησίας με επίκεντρο περιοχή 318 χιλιομέτρων ανατολικά-βορειοανατολικά του Ντίλι, της πρωτεύουσας του Ανατολικού Τιμόρ, ανακοίνωσε το USGS. Ο σεισμός είχε εστιακό βάθος 18 χιλιομέτρων. Το κέντρο προειδοποίησης τσουνάμι στον Ειρηνικό Ωκεανό δεν εξέδωσε σήμα κινδύνου. Επίσης έως τώρα δεν έχουν αναφερθεί θύματα ή ζημιές.
Η Ινδονησία βρίσκεται στο αποκαλούμενο «Δαχτυλίδι της Φωτιάς» μια περιοχή του Ειρηνικού Ωκεανού όπου οι τεκτονικές πλάκες συγκρούονται, προκαλώντας συχνές σεισμικές και ηφαιστειακές δραστηριότητες.
Ένας σεισμός 6,1 βαθμών της κλίμακας Ρίχτερ που έπληξε τον περασμένο Ιούλιο την επαρχία Άτσε στο νησί της Σουμάτρα, προκάλεσε το θάνατο 35 ανθρώπων ενώ άφησε άστεγους χιλιάδες άλλους.
