Η Βρετανία θα γίνει η πρώτη χώρα που θα εφαρμόσει την εξωσωματική γονιμοποίηση με τη χρήση στοιχείων DNA από τρεις ανθρώπους, μετά την ανακοίνωση έγκρισης της αμφιλεγόμενης επιστημονικής τεχνικής.
Μέχρι το τέλος του έτους αναμένεται να καταρτιστεί το σχέδιο κανονισμού εφαρμογής της τεχνικής, η οποία εκτιμάται ότι θα είναι διαθέσιμη για ενδιαφερόμενους εντός διετίας. Θεωρείται ότι θα μπορεί να προσφέρεται σε έως και δέκα ζευγάρια το χρόνο.
Οι ειδικοί λένε ότι η εξωσωματική γονιμοποίηση με γενετικό υλικό τριών ανθρώπων μπορεί να εξαλείψει τις πιθανότητες το νεογέννητο να φέρει σοβαρές και δυνητικά μοιραίες μιτοχονδριακές ασθένειες που περνούν από τη μητέρα στο παιδί. Το νεογέννητο θα φέρει τα στοιχεία DNA των δύο γονέων του και μια μικρή ποσότητα γενετικού υλικού από τη δωρήτρια του υγιούς ωαρίου. Οι επικριτές της τεχνικής υποστηρίζουν ότι είναι ανήθικη και αντιπροτείνουν την απλή απευθείας χρήση ωαρίων από δωρήτριες.
Τα ελαττωματικά μιτοχόνδρια επηρεάζουν ένα στα 6.500 βρέφη. Μπορούν να προκαλέσουν ατροφία μυών, τύφλωση, καρδιακή ανεπάρκεια και θάνατο.
