Κύπελλο ειδικής κατασκευής που βασίζεται στην εφαρμογή μιας απλής υδραυλικής αρχής. Εσωτερικά έχει μία γραμμή που ορίζει ως που πρέπει να γεμίσει. Μία σταγόνα παραπάνω και η κούπα αδειάζει όλο τον οίνο της από μία κρυφή οπή στη βάση. Ο φιλόσοφος έφτιαξε την κούπα για να πίνει με μέτρο τον οίνο.
Καλείται επίσης “κούπα του δικαίου” διότι πλην της υδραυλικής, αντανακλά και μία από τις βασικές αρχές του δικαίου, αυτήν της Ύβρεως και Νεμέσεως. Όταν το όριο ξεπερνιέται (Ύβρις), δεν χάνονται μόνον όσα έχουν ξεπεράσει το όριο, αλλά και όλα τα προηγούμενα που είχαν αποκτηθεί (Νέμεσις).
Διά της απλής εφαρμογής μιας υδραυλικής αρχής, ο φιλόσοφος Πυθαγόρας μας διδάσκει από τα βάθη του χρόνου, να δεχόμαστε το άριστο μέτρο και να απολαμβάνουμε τον οίνο που ήδη έχουμε στην κούπα μας αντλώντας την μέγιστη ωφέλεια.
Εάν κάποιος αντί να δεχθεί την άριστη ποσότητα (αυτή που του αναλογεί και που αρκεί για να τον ικανοποιήσει), υπερβεί έστω και λίγο τα όρια, η κούπα ξεχειλίζει, χύνοντας στο έδαφος όλη την προϋπάρχουσα ποσότητα. Μη απολαμβάνοντας αυτό που ήδη υπάρχει και ζητώντας κάτι παραπάνω από τα επιτρεπτά όρια, φεύγει μέσα από τα χέρια του και αυτό που θα έπρεπε να τον είχε ευχαριστήσει αλλά που δεν το κατεδέχθη, ζητώντας το πέραν των ορίων επιπλέον…
