Τον τρόμο που προκαλεί ο Έμπολα προσπάθησαν να εκμεταλλευτούν επιτήδειοι στην Τσεχία που απείλησαν ότι θα διασπείρουν τον ιό εάν δεν τους δώσουν ένα εκατομμύριο ευρώ σε… μπιτκόιν.
«Ένας ή περισσότεροι δράστες εκβιάζουν το κράτος και απειλούν ότι θα διασπείρουν τον ιό Έμπολα», είπε ο υποδιευθυντής της εθνικής αστυνομίας, Ζντένεκ Λάουμπε και προσέθεσε:
«Εξ αρχής, ο βασικός στόχος τους ήταν να προκαλέσουν πανικό».
Το υπουργείο Εσωτερικών σε ανακοίνωσή του σημειώνει ότι οι εκβιαστές »χρησιμοποιούν πολύ προηγμένες μεθόδους επικοινωνίας», χωρίς να δώσει περισσότερες διευκρινίσεις. Σύμφωνα με τον Ρόμπερτ Σλάστα, τον επικεφαλής της υπηρεσίας καταπολέμησης του οργανωμένου εγκλήματος, οι δράστες, εφόσον εντοπισθούν και συλληφθούν, μπορεί να καταδικαστούν ακόμη και σε 12ετή κάθειρξη.
Ο επικεφαλής της υπηρεσίας δημόσιας υγείας Βλαντίμιρ Βαλέντα εμφανίστηκε πάντως καθησυχαστικός, λέγοντας ότι είναι ελάχιστες οι πιθανότητες μετάδοσης του Έμπολα στη χώρα.
