Σύμφωνα με τις επίσημες αναφορές, το ατύχημα συνέβη γιατί οδηγός φορτηγού (ή νταλίκας; ) έπεσε πάνω σε σειρά από ακινητοποιημένα αυτοκίνητα στο κλειστό (λόγω έργων) ρεύμα της Εγνατίας. Οπότε ό,τι κανόνες ασφαλείας και να τηρούσαν οι οδηγοί τους, δεν ήταν και κάτι απλό.
