Τον γήινο φλοιό της γης ανοιχτά της Ιαπωνίας ετοιμάζονται να… τρυπήσουν σεισμολόγοι, προκειμένου να προσδιορίσουν την προέλευση των σεισμών.
Πρόκειται για μια αποστολή, η οποία θα διαρκέσει τέσσερις μήνες. Οι επιστήμονες θα προσπαθήσουν με ένα γεωτρύπανο ύψους 121 μέτρων να σκάψουν ως 7.000 μέτρα κάτω από το βυθό της θάλασσας.
Η γεώτρηση άρχισε το 2007 και τώρα θα συνεχιστεί η επιχείρηση. Οι σεισμολόγοι και η ιαπωνική κυβέρνηση είχαν εκφράσει εδώ και χρόνια την ανησυχία τους για το ενδεχόμενο μεγάλου σεισμού που μπορεί να στοιχίσει την ζωή σε περίπου 320.000 ανθρώπους!
Οι ερευνητές έχουν σκοπό να σκάψουν προς το ρήγμα Νανκάι, όπου η πλάκα της θάλασσας των Φιλιππίνων γλιστρά κάτω από την ευρασιατική πλάκα. Σύμφωνα με τις εκτιμήσεις η έντονη γεωλογική δραστηριότητα αυτής της ζώνης θα μπορούσε να προκαλέσει καταστρεπτικό σεισμό.
Οι επιστήμονες μετά το σκάψιμο θα τοποθετήσουν αισθητήρες μέσα στο γήινο φλοιό, οι οποίοι θα συνδέονται με ένα σύστημα ανάλυσης που θα είναι εγκατεστημένο στην ξηρά.
«Θέλουμε να μπορέσουμε να μελετήσουμε πώς κινείται ο γήινος φλοιός στα δευτερόλεπτα που προηγούνται των σεισμών ώστε να μπορέσουμε να προβλέπουμε καλύτερα μελλοντικούς σεισμούς», εξηγούν.
