Dear Sir,
With great surprise I read this morning that the The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that Eugene Fama, Lars Peter Hansen and Robert Shiller won the Nobel prize for Economics for developing methods to study trends in stock, bond and housing markets.
In other words the Academy rewarded those three money-stock-bonds-Economists because they asserted that can predict the future.
However, the Academy should have known that there is not any scientific, historical or philosophical method on which we could depend to predict the future. Prediction in the social sciences like economics is arbitrary, random and anti scientific and we know that from Plato’s era.
However, I would like to point out that because we were pushed to believe in those kinds of oracle theories, such as the theory of the effective markets, since 2008 we live in a crisis. And for this crisis responsible are the theories that the Academy rewarded.
Why then did they not predict the crisis since their theories were correct? What exactly is it that the Academy rewarded?
The Academy has already rewarded Milton Friedman, Kenneth Arrow, Gerald Debreu, Robert Lucas, Fischer Black, Myron Scholes, Thomas Sergent, Neil Wallace, Robert Barro for their economics.
Their economics are based on the assumption that the future path of the economy is predetermined and cannot be changed by any human action. But this kind of economics lead us to a great depression.
Given the above I am wondering why the Academy insisted to award those ideas in the middle of a great European Crisis which they can’t help to exit from it.
Moreover, I would also like to ask you how it is possible for the Academy to believe in those kinds of deterministic theories which are disrespectful to the human spirit.
With Respect
