O πρόεδρος της Γουατεμάλας, Άλβαρο Κολόμ, χαρακτήρισε «έγκλημα κατά της ανθρωπότητας» τα πειράματα που διεξήγαγαν οι Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες τη δεκαετία του 1940 σε βάρος κρατούμενων και ψυχασθενών τους οποίους μόλυναν σκόπιμα με σύφιλη και βλεννόρροια για να μελετήσουν την αποτελεσματικότητα της πενικιλίνης.
Οι ΗΠΑ νωρίτερα ζήτησαν επίσημα συγγνώμη για τα πειράματα που έκαναν στη Γουατεμάλα με σεξουαλικά μεταδιδόμενες ασθένειες. «Αυτό που έγινε εκείνη την εποχή είναι έγκλημα κατά της ανθρωπότητας και η κυβέρνηση επιφυλάσσεται να καταθέσει προσφυγή», είπε ο Κολόμ που ενημερώθηκε για το θέμα από την υπουργό Εξωτερικών των ΗΠΑ, Χίλαρι Κλίντον. Τα πειράματα έγιναν τη διετία 1946-48 και η Κλίντον τα χαρακτήρισε «ανήθικα» και «κατακριτέα». Οι Αμερικανοί γιατροί επέλεξαν για πειραματόζωα άτομα που δεν μπορούσαν να φέρουν αντίρρηση, όπως ψυχασθενείς, και δεν τους ενημέρωσαν ποτέ, ούτε για το αντικείμενο της έρευνας ούτε για το τι επρόκειτο να τους συμβεί. Μάλιστα, τους ενθάρρυναν να μεταδώσουν τις ασθένειες και δεν χορήγησαν θεραπεία σε όσους κόλλησαν σύφιλη. Υπολογίζεται ότι στην «έρευνα» αυτή συμμετείχαν 1500 άτομα. Τουλάχιστον ένας από τους ασθενείς πέθανε κατά τη διάρκεια των πειραμάτων αλλά δεν έχει εξακριβωθεί εάν ο θάνατός του συνδέεται άμεσα με την ασθένεια που του είχαν μεταδώσει.
