Ισχυρή σεισμική δόνηση μεγέθους 5,4 βαθμών της κλίμακας Ρίχτερ σημειώθηκε στη θαλάσσια περιοχή 144 χιλιόμετρα νότια της Ρόδου και 74 χιλιόμετρα νοτιοανατολικά της Καρπάθου.
Σύμφωνα με το Ευρωμεσογειακό Ινστιτούτο, αρχικά ο σεισμός προσδιορίστηκε να έχει μέγεθος 5,9 Ρίχτερ και εστιακό βάθος 2 χιλιομέτρων, αλλά στη συνέχεια αναθεωρήθηκε σε 5,8 Ρίχτερ και κατόπιν σε 5,7 Ρίχτερ, με εστιακό βάθος 10 χιλιόμετρα.
Υπενθυμίζεται ότι, η περιοχή βρίσκεται στον… χορό των Ρίχτερ το τελευταίο διάστημα, καθώς το απόγευμα της Τρίτης (28/01) σημειώθηκε σεισμός μεγέθους 5,2 Ρίχτερ, ενώ την Τετάρτη (29/01) η σεισμική δραστηριότητα συνεχίστηκε, με τον Εγκέλαδο να «γράφει» 4,7 Ρίχτερ.

Επίσης, σεισμική δόνηση μεγέθους 5,2 βαθμών της κλίμακας Ρίχτερ σημειώθηκε και τα ξημερώματα της Πέμπτης (30/01) νοτιοδυτικά της Καρπάθου.
