Κόκκινος βάφτηκε για μία ακόμη φορά ο Θερμαϊκός κόλπος στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Το φαινόμενο της ερυθράς παλίρροιας έκανε την εμφάνισή του στο παραλιακό μέτωπο της πόλης, δημιουργώντας μεγάλες κοκκινωπές κηλίδες.
Το συγκεκριμένο φαινόμενο προκύπτει από τη ραγδαία ανάπτυξη μονοκύτταρων φωτοσυνθετικών οργανισμών που κατατάσσονται στο φυτοπλαγκτόν, δήλωσε στο ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ ο καθηγητής του τμήματος Χημείας του Αριστοτέλειου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης (ΑΠΘ), Κωνσταντίνος Φυτιάνος.
“Μας επισκέπτεται, το φαινόμενο, δύο φορές τον χρόνο: την άνοιξη και το φθινόπωρο, διαρκεί δύο με τρεις εβδομάδες και θα κάνει τον κύκλο του”, ανέφερε χαρακτηριστικά ο κ. Φυτιάνος. Σημείωσε, δε, ότι η πρώτη φορά που εμφανίστηκε η ερυθρά παλίρροια στον Θερμαϊκό ήταν το 1988.
Οι επιπτώσεις της “ερυθράς παλίρροιας” είναι η έντονη δυσοσμία για όσους κάνουν βόλτα στην παραλία της Θεσσαλονίκης, η αισθητική ενόχληση εξαιτίας της απόχρωσης του νερού, αλλά και οι οικονομικές επιπτώσεις που προκαλεί στον πρωτογενή τομέα, όπως τα αλιεύματα.
