Οι καυγάδες είναι ένα σύνηθες φαινόμενο, πλέον, στη Μυτιλήνη με τους μετανάστες και τους πρόσφυγες να έχουν κατακλύσει το νησί, μέχρι να λάβουν τα απαραίτητα έγγραφα για να μεταφερθούν στην Αθήνα.
Οι συγκρούσεις μεταξύ των εθνοτήτων είναι αρκετές φορές οξύτατες, όταν διαπιστώνεται ότι η μετακίνηση γυναικών και παιδιών, και ιδιαίτερα Σύρων προσφύγων, είναι γρηγορότερη απ ότι αυτή άλλων μεταναστών, κυρίως από το Αφγανιστάν και το Πακιστάν.
Η πολύωρη αναμονή τους έξω από το κοντέινερ στο επιβατηγό λιμάνι της Μυτιλήνης, δίπλα στο κολυμβητήριο της πόλης, όπου με τη χρήση δυο συστημάτων υπολογιστών γίνεται η πρώτη καταγραφή και η φωτογράφηση τους, έχει ως αποτέλεσμα να εκδηλώνονται και επιθετικές συμπεριφορές σε βάρος των στελεχών του Λιμενικού Σώματος.
