Την άποψη ότι από τα αποθέματα υδρογονανθράκων που υπάρχουν νότια της Κρήτης, η Ελλάδα θα μπορεί να κερδίσει 500 δισ. Ευρώ σε βάθος χρόνου 25 ετών , με το 5% των χρημάτων αυτών να μένουν στην περιφέρεια Κρήτης, εξέφρασε χθες, μιλώντας σε εκδήλωση στα Χανιά, ο ομότιμος καθηγητής του Πολυτεχνείου Κρήτης Αντώνης Φώσκολος.

δημοσιευθεί κυρίως από ξένους επιστήμονες, μάς υποδεικνύει την ύπαρξη μεγάλων αποθεμάτων υδρογονανθράκων νότια της Κρήτης και ειδικότερα εντός της Μεσογειακής ράχης, έκτασης περίπου 80.000 Km2, με μεγάλο μέρος της να βρίσκεται εντός της Ελληνικής Α.Ο.Ζ.
Όπως χαρακτηριστικά ανέφερε ο κ. Φώσκολος, από την εκμετάλλευση των κοιτασμάτων η Κρήτη για 25 χρόνια θα πάρει 1,2 δισ. το χρόνο.
Ο κ. Φώσκολος στην ομιλία του παρέθεσε στοιχεία Νορβηγών επιστημόνων, σύμφωνα με τα οποία τα αποθέματα κάτω από την Κρήτη είναι της τάξεως των 20 -22 δισ. βαρέλια πετρέλαιο, ενώ σε αυτά μπορούν να προστεθούν και περίπου 20 δισ. βαρέλια πετρελαίου που βρίσκονται στη ζώνη του Ηροδότου, δηλαδή 150 -175 χιλιόμετρα νοτιοανατολικά της Ιεράπετρας.
Σύμφωνα με τα ίδια στοιχεία, σημαντικές περιοχές είναι αυτή μεταξύ Τυμπακίου και Πλακιά, επίσης νότια της Κρήτης, όπως και μία ακόμα περιοχή νότια της νήσου Γαύδου.
