Έκρηξη αερίου σε Κινέζικο ανθρακωρυχείο στην κεντρική επαρχία Χενάν στοίχισε τη ζωή 26 ανθρώπων, την ώρα που εκείνοι εργάζονταν.
Από την έκρηξη κατάφεραν να σωθούν 20 ανθρακωρύχοι. Στα τέλη Οκτωβρίου πλημμύρα σε άλλο ανθρακωρυχείο, στη νοτιοδυτική επαρχία Γκουιζιού, στοίχισε τη ζωή 12 εργαζομένων.
Η διάσωση 33 εργαζομένων σε ορυχείο στη Χιλή, οι οποίοι βρίσκονταν παγιδευμένοι δύο μήνες στις στοές του, προκάλεσε έντονες επικρίσεις προς τις αρχές στην Κίνα για την έλλειψη μέτρων προστασίας για τους εργαζόμενους.
Τα ορυχεία της Κίνας έχουν το χειρότερο ιστορικό εργασιακής ασφάλειας στον κόσμο, λόγω της ανεπαρκούς τήρησης των μέτρων για την προστασία των εργαζομένων.
Μόνο το 2009 οι εργαζόμενοι που σκοτώθηκαν στα ανθρακωρυχεία έφτασαν τους 2.631. Ωστόσο ανεξάρτητες πηγές σημειώνουν ότι ο αριθμός αυτός είναι κατά πολύ υποτιμημένος, καθώς πολλά ορυχεία δεν αποκαλύπτουν ότι σημειώνονται δυστυχήματα σε αυτά για να αποφύγουν το κλείσιμό τους από τις αρχές.
