Δεκατέσσερις μαθητές ενός ιεροδιδασκαλείου και ο καθηγητής τους έχασαν τη ζωή τους τη νύχτα της Τετάρτης προς την Πέμπτη από τις καταρρακτώδεις βροχές που έπληξαν την επαρχία Ουαντέ, στο ανατολικό, ημιάνυδρο Τσαντ, ανακοίνωσε το πρωθυπουργικό γραφείο.
«Τη νύχτα της 4ης προς την 5η Σεπτεμβρίου, καταρρακτώδεις βροχές έπληξαν την επαρχία Ουαντέ (…) ένας κεραυνός έπεσε σε ένα σχολείο, προκαλώντας τον θάνατο 15 ανθρώπων και τον τραυματισμό πολλών άλλων», ανέφερε η πηγή αυτή.
Σύμφωνα με τον κυβερνήτη της επαρχίας, από τις βροχές κατέρρευσε ένα σπίτι όπου ζούσαν τα παιδιά, με αποτέλεσμα να σκοτωθούν 14 μαθητές και ο δάσκαλός τους.
Στα μέσα Αυγούστου, τουλάχιστον 54 άνθρωποι σκοτώθηκαν από τις πλημμύρες στην επαρχία Τιμπέστι, στο βόρειο Τσαντ. Ο ΟΗΕ προειδοποίησε την Τρίτη για τις βροχές και τις πλημμύρες στην περιοχή, σημειώνοντας ότι το Τσαντ είναι η χώρα που έχει πληγεί περισσότερο, καθώς μέσα σε λίγες εβδομάδες έχουν υποστεί τις συνέπειες αυτών των ακραίων φαινομένων περισσότεροι από 246.000 άνθρωποι.
Ο ΟΗΕ ζήτησε επίσης να αναληφθεί αμέσως δράση και να επενδυθούν επαρκείς πόροι για την αντιμετώπιση της κλιματικής κρίσης.
