Τα Στενά του Βοσπόρου έκλεισαν στην κυκλοφορία των πλοίων μετά το συμβάν, ανακοίνωσε η Tribeca Shipping Agency.
Το πλοίο είχε αναφέρει βλάβη λίγη ώρα πριν από την πρόσκρουσή του και επρόκειτο να ρυμουλκηθεί.
Το υπό λιβερική σημαία πλοίο προερχόταν από το λιμάνι της Οδησσού στην Ουκρανία και κατευθυνόταν προς το λιμάνι Άμπαρλι της Κωνσταντινούπολης, σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία της Refinitiv Eikon.
Ατυχήματα τέτοιου είδους είναι σπάνια στον Βόσπορο, εκ των πλέον πολυσύχναστων στενών για την ναυσιπλοΐα στον κόσμο και πολύτιμων για την Ρωσία και άλλες χώρες της Μαύρης Θάλασσας.
Τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες, ο πρόεδρος της Τουρκίας Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν επανέφερε τα σχέδια για το άνοιγμα θαλάσσιου καναλιού δυτικά της Κωνσταντινούπολης που θα ενώνει την Μαύρη Θάλασσα με την Θάλασσα του Μαρμαρά για την αποσυμφόρηση του Βοσπόρου, παρά την αντίθεση του νέου δημάρχου της Πόλης, καθώς και περιβαλλοντολόγων και πολιτών που έχουν υπογράψει σχετική έκκληση.
