Τρία ακόμη ηφαίστεια, to Kerinci στη Δυτική Σουμάτρα, το Semeru στην Ανατολική Ιάβα και το όρος Merapi στην Κεντρική Ιάβα έδειξαν αυξημένη δραστηριότητα την Παρασκευή, την ίδια ημέρα που εξερράγη το ηφαίστειο στο Krakatau.
Η δραστηριότητα στα τέσσερα βουνά ήταν άσχετη μεταξύ τους, καθώς κάθε ηφαίστειο είχε διαφορετικό θάλαμο μάγματος, σύμφωνα με το Κέντρο Ηφαιστειολογίας και Γεωλογικού Κινδύνου (PVMBG).
Η έντονη ηφαιστειακή και σεισμική δραστηριότητα είναι πάντως κανόνας στην Ινδονησία, η οποία βρίσκεται στον «Δακτύλιο της Φωτιάς» του Ειρηνικού, μια περιοχή όπου σχηματίζονται πολλά ηφαίστεια και σεισμοί.
“Οι ηφαιστειακές εκρήξεις στην Ινδονησία είναι ένα σύνηθες πράγμα καθώς συμβαίνουν κάθε μέρα”, δήλωσε ο επικεφαλής της PVMBG το Σάββατο, προσθέτοντας ότι οι εκρήξεις δεν συνέβησαν ταυτόχρονα.
