Σαν να μην φθάνουν οι καιρικές καταιγίδες, η Γη βρίσκεται από την Τρίτη στο επίκεντρο μιας κολοσσιαίας μαγνητικής καταιγίδας η οποία απειλεί εκτός των άλλων το σύνολο των ηλεκτρονικών συστημάτων του πλανήτη.
Η μαγνητική καταιγίδα προκλήθηκε από αυξημένη ηλιακή δραστηριότητα και το φαινόμενο αναμένεται να προκαλέσει διαταραχές στη λειτουργία ευαίσθητων ηλεκτρονικών συστημάτων, όπως οι δορυφόροι και τα συστήματα GPS.
Επίσης, αναμένεται να παρουσιαστεί το βόρειο σέλας σε ασυνήθιστες περιοχές, και διαταραχές στην τάση του ηλεκτρικού ρεύματος, αλλά και στην υγεία ατόμων με ευαισθησία στις καιρικές αλλαγές.
Η καταιγίδα αναμένεται να διαρκέσει ως τις πρώτες πρωινές ώρες της Πέμπτης και είναι η μεγαλύτερη που έχει καταγραφεί τα τελευταία χρόνια.
