Ένα άτομο έχασε τη ζωή του και άλλα 12 νοσηλεύονται σε κρίσιμη κατάσταση με λιστερίωση, πιθανότατα επειδή κατανάλωσαν έτοιμες, ωμές σαλάτες που παράγονται σε εργοστάσιο της εταιρείας Dole Food Co Inc, στο Σπρίνγκφιλντ του Οχάιο, όπως ανακοίνωσαν τα Κέντρα Ελέγχου και Πρόληψης Ασθενειών των ΗΠΑ (CDC).
Όπως αναφέρεται στο ΑΠΕ, η εταιρεία ενημέρωσε τα CDC την Πέμπτη ότι διέκοψε την παραγωγή και την επεξεργασία τροφίμων στη μονάδα της στο Σπρίνγκφιλντ και αποσύρει ήδη από τα καταστήματα όλες τις έτοιμες σαλάτες.
Μέχρι στιγμής δεν υπάρχουν ενδείξεις ότι οι έτοιμες σαλάτες που έχουν παραχθεί σε άλλες μονάδες της ίδιας εταιρείας ευθύνονται για την επιδημία.
Η λιστερίωση είναι μια σοβαρή λοίμωξη που προκαλείται από την κατανάλωση τροφίμων μολυσμένα με το βακτηρίδιο της λιστέριας. Συνήθως πλήττει κυρίως ηλικιωμένους, έγκυες, νεογέννητα και ενήλικους με αδύναμο ανοσοποιητικό σύστημα.
