Η Υπηρεσία Τροφίμων και Φαρμάκων (FDA) των ΗΠΑ είχε χορηγήσει ειδική άδεια για τη διενέργεια της πρωτοποριακής μεταμόσχευσης με το σκεπτικό ότι αλλιώς ο ασθενής θα είχε πεθάνει.
Ο χοίρος από τον οποίο ελήφθη η καρδιά, είχε προηγουμένως τροποποιηθεί γενετικά από την αμερικανική εταιρεία βιοτεχνολογίας Revivicor (θυγατρική της United Therapeutics), έτσι ώστε να απενεργοποιηθούν ορισμένα γονίδια του.
Η λήψη μοσχεύματος από ζώο (ξενομεταμόσχευση), η οποία δοκιμάστηκε για πρώτη φορά στη δεκαετία του 1980, αποσκοπεί στην κάλυψη της μεγάλης ζήτησης. Ήδη εδώ και δεκαετίες γίνεται μεταμόσχευση βαλβίδων καρδιάς από χοίρους. Πέρυσι τον Οκτώβριο έγινε πειραματικά στη Νέα Υόρκη η πρώτη επιτυχής σύνδεση νεφρού χοίρου σε έναν εγκεφαλικά νεκρό άνθρωπο χωρίς ελπίδα ανάρρωσης.
