Ο Ιταλός υπουργός Εξωτερικών Λουίτζι Ντι Μάιο, σε ανάρτησή του στο Facebook στην οποία αναφέρεται στην τρομοκρατική επίθεση που έλαβε χώρα στη Βιέννη, τόνισε ότι «η Ευρώπη χρειάζεται έναν Πατριωτικό Νόμο (Patriot Act), με σημείο αναφοράς εκείνον της Αμερικής, διότι είμαστε όλοι παιδιά του ίδιου ευρωπαϊκού λαού».
Όπως μεταδίδει ο ανταποκριτής του ΑΠΕ – ΜΠΕ, ο Ντι Μάιο σημείωσε ότι πρόκειται για μέτρα ικανά να επιτρέψουν την πρόληψη και αποφυγή επιθέσεων, όπως αυτών της Νίκαιας και της Βιέννης, και ότι θα συζητήσει σύντομα το θέμα με τους ευρωπαίους ομολόγους του.
«Η ασφάλεια ενός ευρωπαϊκού κράτους ισοδυναμεί με την ασφάλεια όλων των άλλων. Πρέπει να αρχίσουμε να σκεφτόμαστε κάτι ευρύτερο, που να αφορά όλη την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση», κατέληξε ο επικεφαλής της ιταλικής διπλωματίας.
Ο αμερικανικός Πατριωτικός Νόμος (Patriot Act), ο οποίος υιοθετήθηκε το 2001 την επομένη των φονικών τρομοκρατικών επιθέσεων στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες και επικρίνεται από υποστηρικτές των ανθρώπινων δικαιωμάτων, δίνει στην κυβέρνηση ευρύτερες εξουσίες επιτήρησης και παρακολούθησης όταν πρόκειται για αντιτρομοκρατικές έρευνες.
