Ο μεγαλύτερος πλανήτης στο ηλιακό μας σύστημα χτυπήθηκε με ορμή από έναν αστεροειδή ή κομήτη, και μερικοί ατρόμητοι λάτρεις του ουρανού κατέγραψαν την τελευταία σύγκρουση του πλανήτη στην κάμερα.
Ο ερασιτέχνης αστρονόμος John McKeon παρατηρούσε το βασιλιά των πλανητών από ένα τηλεσκόπιο από το Swords της Ιρλανδίας, στις 17 Μαρτίου όταν κατέγραψε αυτό το εκπληκτικό time-lapse βίντεο από ένα αντικείμενο που χτύπησε το Δία. Ο McKeon κατέγραφε τη διέλευση των φεγγαριών του Δία, Ιώ και Γανυμήδη με ένα τηλεσκόπιο Schmidt-Cassegrain 11-ιντσών και την ASI120mm φωτογραφική μηχανή του, όταν κάτι χτύπησε τον Δία.
Ενώ είναι ακόμα πολύ νωρίς για να γνωρίζουμε τις ακριβείς λεπτομέρειες σχετικά με τη πρόσκρουση στο Δία, ο ειδικός της NASA στους αστεροειδείς, Paul Chodas, ο οποίος είναι επικεφαλής του Κέντρου για τη Μελέτη Κοντινών Αντικειμένων προς τη Γη (Near-Earth Object Studies) στο Εργαστήριο Αεριοπροώθησης στην Πασαντίνα της Καλιφόρνια, δήλωσε ότι υπάρχει μεγαλύτερη πιθανότητα ο ένοχος να είναι ένας αστεροειδής και όχι ένας κομήτης απλώς και μόνο επειδή υπάρχουν περισσότεροι από αυτούς.
