Πάνω από 350 άνθρωποι πέθαναν από χολέρα στη Νιγηρία τους πρώτους εννέα μήνες του έτους, δηλαδή σημειώθηκε αύξηση 239% από την ίδια περίοδο πέρυσι, δείχνουν τα στοιχεία που δημοσιοποιήθηκαν σήμερα από το Κέντρο Ελέγχου Ασθενειών (NCDC) της χώρας.
Η χολέρα, ασθένεια που μεταδίδεται από το νερό, δεν είναι κάτι το ασυνήθιστο στη Νιγηρία όπου οι υγειονομικές αρχές δηλώνουν ότι υπάρχει έλλειψη πόσιμου νερού σε αγροτικές περιοχές και αστικές φτωχογειτονιές.
Το NCDC διευκρίνισε ότι 359 άνθρωποι πέθαναν ανάμεσα στον Ιανουάριο και τον Σεπτέμβριο σε σύγκριση με 106 την ίδια περίοδο πέρυσι.
Ο αριθμός των ύποπτων κρουσμάτων χολέρας επίσης αυξήθηκε σε 10.837 από 3.387 την ίδια περίοδο πέρυσι, με τους περισσότερους πληγέντες να είναι παιδιά ηλικίας κάτω των 5 ετών.
Το Λάγκος, η εμπορική πρωτεύουσα της χώρας, κατέγραψε τον υψηλότερο αριθμό κρουσμάτων, σύμφωνα με το NCDC.
Οι αρχές της Μπόρνο, στη βορειοανατολική Νιγηρία, ανακοίνωσαν την Παρασκευή ότι ξέσπασμα χολέρας έχει πλήξει την πολιτεία αυτή, η οποία μαστιζόταν ήδη από πλημμύρες που ανάγκασαν σχεδόν 2 εκατομμύρια ανθρώπους να εγκαταλείψουν τις εστίες τους.
