Το 2016, ένας 26χρονος άνδρας από το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, ονόματι Μπεν Ινές, ήταν επιβάτης σε πτήση της EgyptAir με προορισμό το Κάιρο.
Κατά τη διάρκεια του ταξιδιού, ο Seif Eldin Mustafa, ένας άλλος επιβάτης, έκανε αεροπειρατεία στο αεροπλάνο. Φορούσε ένα γιλέκο που φαινόταν να είναι γεμάτο με εκρηκτικά και κρατούσε έναν πυροκροτητή, απειλώντας να πυροδοτήσει τη βόμβα. Ο Μουσταφά απαίτησε να αλλάξει το δρομολόγιο του αεροπλάνου προς την Κύπρο και ο πιλότος, ανησυχώντας για την ασφάλεια όλων, συμμορφώθηκε.
Μόλις έφτασε στην Κύπρο, ο Μουσταφά απελευθέρωσε τους περισσότερους επιβάτες, αλλά κράτησε τρεις επιβάτες και τέσσερα μέλη του πληρώματος ως ομήρους. Μεταξύ των ομήρων ήταν και ο Ben Innes. Σε μια αναπάντεχη τροπή των γεγονότων, ο Μπεν πλησίασε τον Μουσταφά και ρώτησε αν μπορούσε να βγάλει μια selfie μαζί του. Ο αεροπειρατής, φαινομενικά αμήχανος, επέτρεψε τη φωτογραφία.
Αργότερα, αποκαλύφθηκε ότι η βόμβα ήταν ψεύτικη. Ο Μουσταφά συνελήφθη και οι όμηροι απελευθερώθηκαν. Ο Ben Innes εξήγησε αργότερα ότι η απόφασή του να βγάλει μια selfie ήταν μια προσπάθεια να παραμείνει θετικός, με το σκεπτικό ότι δεν είχε τίποτα να χάσει αν η βόμβα ήταν αληθινή.
