12 horses dead in fire at equestrian facility; witnesses tell of freeing animals from blaze

A dozen horses were killed and 11 others were injured when fire broke out at an equestrian facility outside Lake Worth, fire officials said.

Jamie Daley, 34, and Dale Gilmour, 43, were some of the first people to spot the fire just before midnight Tuesday at the South Florida Trotting Center, 7563 South State Road 7. They were at their barn about a quarter mile away when Daley looked over and noticed smoke.

“We thought maybe it was a either a tractor or maybe back in the field where they burn sometimes so we decided to take a ride down just to check it out,” Daley said.

They arrived to find smoke billowing from half the barn with the end of the barn in flames.
