Ήταν ο Ολλανδός Paul Crutzen ο οποίος έχει βραβευθεί με το Νομπέλ Χημείας είχε προτείνει τον ορισμό Ανθρωπόκαιννος ενώ είχε υποστηρίξει πως αυτή ξεκίνησε με τη Βιομηχανική Επανάσταση. Επέλεξε τη συγκεκριμένη λέξη για να περιγράψει τις «ανθρωπογενείς» γεωλογικές αλλαγές που βρίσκονται σε εξέλιξη ενώ τεκμηρίωσε την άποψή του σειρά στοιχείων.

Όπως είναι εμφανές η λέξη Anthroposcene – Ανθρωπόκαινος είναι σύνθετη από τις λέξεις «άνρθωπος» και «καινός» που σημαίνει καινούριος, νέος. Ενώ αξίζει να σημειωθεί πως όλες οι γεωλογικές εποχές, που ξεκίνησαν πριν από 65εκατ χρόνια περίπου, έχουν το συνθετικό «καινός». Οι προηγούμενες εποχές ήταν οι: Ολόκαινος, Πλειστόκαινος, Πλειόκαινος, Μειόκαινος, Ολιγόκαινος, Ηώκαινος και Παλαιόκαινος και ανήκουν όλες στην τεταρτογενή και τριτογενή περίοδος του Καινοζωικού Αιώνα.
