Η εταιρεία βιοτεχνολογίας Monsanto ανακοίνωσε την Τετάρτη τη μείωση των κερδών της κατά 34% το πρώτο τετράμηνο του 2015, ως αποτέλεσμα της μειωμένης ζήτησης των γενετικά τροποποιημένων σπόρων της από τους αγρότες στη Νότια Αμερική.
Τα έσοδα της εταιρείας από την πώληση αγροτικών προϊόντων μειώθηκαν κατά 8% (2,87 δις δολάρια) σε αυτή την περίοδο, λόγω του περιορισμού των πωλήσεων σπόρων καλαμποκιού και ζιζανιοκτόνων. Η μείωση οφείλεται και στη συρρίκνωση της παραγωγής γτο βαμβακιού στην Αυστραλία.
Ένα – μικρό – πλήγμα για τον γίγαντα της βιοτεχνολογίας, της εταιρείας που προσπαθεί να ελέγξει την διατροφή σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο και να επιβάλει τα γενετικά τροποποιημένα προϊόντα στο τραπέζι μας.
Οι κινητοποιήσεις έναντια στα προϊόντα της Monsanto που γίνονται σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο, φαίνεται πως έχουν αρχίσει να αποδίδουν, αν και ο δρόμος για την απαγόρευση των γτο είναι μακρύς και γεμάτος εμπόδια.
