Σε εξέλιξη βρίσκεται η ψηφοφορία επί της διαδικασίας στη Γερουσία για το σχέδιο νόμου που θα εξασφαλίσει τη χρηματοδότηση του ομοσπονδιακού κράτους και θα αποτρέψει την αναστολή της λειτουργίας ομοσπονδιακών υπηρεσιών ως την 16η Φεβρουαρίου.
Λίγο πριν την έναρξη της ψηφοφορίας, ο Αμερικανός πρόεδρος Ντόναλντ Τραμπ με ανάρτησή του στο twitter εξέφρασε την απαισιοδοξία του για την πιθανότητα επίτευξης συμφωνίας, κατηγορώντας τους Δημοκρατικούς.
«Δεν δείχνει ευοίωνη η κατάσταση για τον σπουδαίο μας στρατό και την ασφάλειά μας στα πολύ επικίνδυνα νότια σύνορα. Οι Δημοκρατικοί επιθυμούν την αναστολή λειτουργίας δημοσίων υπηρεσιών (shutdown) ώστε να υποβαθμίσουν τη μεγάλη επιτυχία των περικοπών στη φορολογία και σε όσα κάνουν για την ακμάζουσα οικονομία μας».
Αν η Γερουσία δεν καταφέρει να υιοθετήσει έναν προσωρινό προϋπολογισμό, η ομοσπονδιακή κυβέρνηση των ΗΠΑ μπορεί να βρεθεί σε κατάσταση μερικής παράλυσης από το πρωί του Σαββάτου και εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες υπάλληλοι να τεθούν σε αναγκαστική αργία.
