Ηυπουργός Υγείας της Κεράλα Veena George είπε ότι το αγόρι ήταν από την πόλη Pandikkad και ότι όσοι ήρθαν σε επαφή μαζί του είχαν απομονωθεί και υποβληθεί σε εξετάσεις, σύμφωνα με το BBC.
Ζητήθηκε από τους ανθρώπους της περιοχής να λάβουν προφυλάξεις, όπως να φορούν μάσκες σε δημόσιους χώρους και να μην επισκέπτονται άτομα στο νοσοκομείο.
Η μόλυνση από τον ιό Nipah είναι μια «ζωονοσογόνος νόσος» που μεταδίδεται από ζώα όπως οι χοίροι και οι νυχτερίδες φρούτων στον άνθρωπο, σύμφωνα με τον Παγκόσμιο Οργανισμό Υγείας (ΠΟΥ). Μπορεί επίσης να μεταδοθεί μέσω μολυσμένων τροφίμων και επαφής με μολυσμένο άτομο.
Ο ΠΟΥ έχει περιγράψει τον ιό ως παθογόνο προτεραιότητας λόγω της δυνατότητάς του να προκαλέσει επιδημία. Ο 14χρονος πέθανε την Κυριακή, μόλις μία ημέρα αφότου επιβεβαιώθηκε ότι είχε τον ιό, σύμφωνα με ινδικά μέσα ενημέρωσης.
Ορισμένες περιοχές της Κεράλα κινδυνεύουν περισσότερο από αυτόν τον ιό.
Μια έρευνα που δημοσιεύθηκε από το Reuters πέρυσι διαπίστωσε ότι αυτή η τροπική πολιτεία, η οποία έχει υποστεί ταχεία αστικοποίηση και μαζική αποψίλωση των δασών, έχει δημιουργήσει «ιδανικές συνθήκες για την εμφάνιση ενός ιού όπως ο Nipah».

Πέρυσι, οι αρχές στην πολιτεία Κεράλα έκλεισαν σχολεία και γραφεία αφού επιβεβαίωσαν πέντε κρούσματα. Δεν υπάρχει εμβόλιο για αυτόν τον ιό που σκοτώνει έως και το 75% των μολυσμένων ανθρώπων. Τα συμπτώματα συχνά ξεκινούν με πονοκέφαλο και υπνηλία, αλλά μπορεί να οδηγήσουν σε κώμα εντός ημερών.
